Regions - South Africa
Having spent years in isolation behind the curtain of apartheid and
political sanctions South Africa has yet to realise its potential on the
UK market. Nevertheless, it is a country that has a lot to offer
particularly with classic varietals, such as Cabernet and Chardonnay as
well as their own home grown Pinotage.
Pinotage is South Africa's own grape variety and was developed in 1925 at Stellenbosch University by crossing Cinsault and Pinot Noir. This variety traditionally produced big, baked earthy, volatile wines. Today more refined styles can be found with rich plums, redcurrants, bananas and spice.
Stellenbosch and Paarl are South Africa's premier wine regions. Stellenbosch with its warm dry summers, is home to some of South Africa's finest estates.
