Regions - South of France
French Country
Over the last twenty years the standard of French Country wines (i.e.
those produced outside the great regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire
etc.) has improved beyond all recognition. Once a reference to
inexpensive bulk wine made from uninspiring grape varieties, the term
French Country wines now embraces some of the most exciting wines made
in France.
The South of France is an important source for these wines. It offers more relaxed regulations, cheaper production costs and plenty of sunshine have attracted flying winemakers who have brought fresh ideas to this region. It is a huge area stretching from the Pyrénées to the border with Italy and produces diverse styles to suit most palates. The South encompasses hundreds of regional wines from local varieties as well as wines made from the noble Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay that offer great value alternatives to the single varietal wines of Australia and New Zealand.
The quality of Languedoc-Rousillon's great AC wines of Minervois, Corbières, Faugères and St. Chinian made predominantly from Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Carignan are now fresher, better balanced, yet still loyal to their traditions and region - and best of all they offer fantastic value for money.
