France, The Alsace
Alsace produces some of the world's greatest white wines. Using grape
varieties ranging from the noble Riesling through to the spicy
Gewürztraminer, they offer a range of flavours that are not matched by
any other region in France.
The wines of Alsace are often seen as Germanic in style. Both German and Alsace wines are pure, fresh, unoaked and with a lively acidity that comes from their shared northerly climate. However, with the exception of dessert wines, Alsace tends to produce drier, richer wines that are high in alcohol. In Alsace the grapes generally achieve a greater ripeness due to the protection from the Vosges mountains and the plentiful sun that continues well into the autumn. Look no further than Domaine Blanck to experience the truly exotic nature of these unique wines.
Food is the key - these fine flavoured wines work brilliantly with many different types of cooking. The smoky, limey flavours of Riesling combine perfectly with the spicy Eastern dishes using ginger, coriander, garlic and, of course, lime. The elegant Pinot Blanc is a fine partner for white fish while the Tokay Pinot Gris with its rich, full-bodied almost Chardonnay like style is a great match for roast game. Finally, the aromatic Gewürztraminer is typically matched with spicy dishes and is a stunning accompaniment to blue veined and strongly flavoured cheeses like the local Munster.
