Château de la Chartreause

Located approximately 40 km to the south-east of Bordeaux, Sauternes produces a liqueur-like, golden, delicate, robust and heady wine with a pleasant bouquet, considered to be the most famous sweet white wine in the world. In September, dense fogs emanating from the river invade the vineyard and contribute to the development of the Botrytis Cinerea fungus on the over-ripe grapes. Owned by Madame Facchetti-Ricard this chateau produces wines made from 1% Muscadelle, 14% Sauvignon, and 85% Semillon. The vines are planted in a silicious and gravelly soil with a chalky subsoil, near Ciron, in the Sauternes appellation. The "terroir" of Preignac produces Sauternes lighter than those situated in the south of the appellation, but they are still rich and very aromatic.
