Red Burgundy

Burgundy is possibly the most confusing of any wine area as a result of the fragmented ownership of the vineyard land. At best, the wines, both red and white, have great finesse and elegance. In all areas of wine production the most important piece of information on the label is the name of the producer, as both good and bad wines come out of every area, every year. Nevertheless, nature has been kind to Burgundy over recent years, and the producers whom we follow have managed to produce lovely wines for several vintages in a row. Michel Guillemot in Macon achieves greater intensity in his wine every year, and Dury's Rully seems to get better and better.

St. Aubin 1er Cru, Henri Prudhon et Fils
Prudhon produces wines that offer a true representation of Burgundy, but at non-Burgundy prices. One of the oldest families in Saint-Aubin where viticulture has been handed down the generations. Currently run by Gérard Prudhon, who is a strong believer in traditional and ecologically sound methods of production. All Prudhon's wines have a great clarity and purity and the Premier Crus are remarkable in their complexity and sophistication.

Red - 2002 Vintage

A year which produced red and white Burgundies of great style and quality. They will improve over a number of years and so are best drunk after the 2003 vintages.

    Price
2002 Saint Aubin 1er Cru 'Les Frionnes', Prudhon   £14.80
This is a slightly rustic, reserved style of Burgundy. It is drinking very well now and showing earthy beetroot flavours with hints of strawberry on the mid-palate.   Qty

2002 Hautes-Côte de Nuits, Duband   £15.10
Distinctive Nuits style - purity of fruit and rich texture, but at an affordable price.   Qty

2002 Nuits-St-Georges Villages, Duband   £24.60
A very intense, savoury, almost meaty nose. The palate is fresh and natural, with good acidity. Ripe raspberry with a touch of cassis. Rounded, silky finish. Very fine.   Qty

2002 Vosne-Romanee, Engel   £30.70
An attractive black cherry nose with velvety ripe fruit and smooth elegant finish. Was an even better vintage then the 1999. Keep.   Qty

2002 Volnay 1er Cru 'Les Fremiets', Voillot   £31.30
An excellent vintage for the Côtes de Beaune. Lush, velvety and perfumed, from one of the Volnay growers whose wines always show great purity.   Qty

2002 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'la Perrière', Potel   £36.70
The nose is deep cherry with a hint of sweetness, very forward palate with drying, smooth tannins and good acidity. Nicely structured with very good fruit.   Qty
