Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot
In the world of wine production, there are many colourful individuals, and it is always exciting to discover innovative wines which will reflect a market that is constantly changing. There is also comfort in recognising that a number of great wine growers who are capable of producing wines of wonderful quality, year in year out. A man who has a foot in both of these camps is Jean-Marc Boillot, who has beautiful vineyard sites in the Cote de Beaune.
He knows his vineyards like the back of his hand, and is now being ably assisted by his daughter Lydie and son Benjamin, who are displaying the talent inherited from him.
Puligny-Montrachet 2006
In contrast with Boillot's single-vineyard village Meursault, his 2006 Puligny-Montrachet originates in nine diverse locations. Lime, grapefruit, vanilla, and liquorice in the nose leads to a juicy, generously juicy yet quite dense palate, tinged with candied citrus rind and liquorice, and finishes with chalky minerality and just a hint of drying, overt woodiness. The excellent 2005 and 2004 are both more savory and mineral, with the older of these having the edge in brightness, complexity, and length.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Champs Canet’ 2006
The Boillot 2006 Puligny-Montrachet Champs Canet represents a jump in concentration and complexity over the wines that preceded it in this collection. Lime, orange zest, lanolin, white peach and chalk dust in the nose lead to a vividly juicy, dynamic palate presence featuring an entertaining interplay of citrus, mineral, nut, and pit fruit elements. Creamy in texture yet refreshingly bright and long-finishing, this runs rings around the corresponding Refert, calling attention to the latter's static, heavier nature

Volnay 1er Cru ‘les Pitures’ 2005
Good deep ruby-red. Wild raspberry, mint and smoke on the nose. Supple, sweet and solid; less open than the Saucilles but there's plenty of material here. The tannins arrive late and saturate the tongue.
